Ernest J. Ni'A
Ernest J. Ni’A, the visionary behind Education Empowerment 2021, traces his roots to Detroit, Michigan, where he was born as Ernest J. Garrison. Overcoming early struggles with reading and being labeled “Unlearnable,” he defied the odds. Despite being placed in a program dubbed “Special,” his widowed mother’s unwavering belief in his potential led her to advocate for his inclusion in regular classes. This pivotal moment exposed Ernest to the profound understanding of the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Guided by his mother, he engaged in community programs to enhance his reading, math, and communication skills, fostering a foundation of faith and positive thinking.
Embracing the concept that he was truly “Special” in the eyes of God, Ernest thrived. He embarked on a journey that culminated in a Master’s Degree and a dedication to aiding others similarly labeled “Special.” He initiated the “Uncle Ernie Scholarship,” honoring academic excellence from First Grade through Graduate School.
In 2014, following introspection and spiritual exploration, Ernest embraced a new identity, becoming Ernest J. Ni’A. This name echoes the principles of his life’s mission, as “Ni’A” represents “Purpose” in Kwanzaa’s fifth observance, aligning with his December 30th birthday—coinciding with NIA’s celebration. His book, “Why I Changed My Name,” illuminates this transformation.
In 2021, after talks with his son, Ernest II, he catalyzed a new chapter, prompting the establishment of the 501c3 entity, EducationEmpowerment. This organization now extends the opportunity for others to join the journey of empowering students through education and purpose-driven support.
